Vancomycin hydrochloride is a glycopeptide antibiotic, which is the hydrochloride of vancomycin. It is a white or off-white crystalline powder at room temperature, and its mechanism of action is high-affinity binding to the peptide end of the sensitive bacterial cell wall. Alanyl alanine blocks the synthesis of high molecular peptidoglycans that constitute the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell wall defects and killing bacteria.
