Melittin is a kind of peptide with antibacterial and antiviral effects. It is composed of 26 amino acids and can inhibit the growth and reproduction of more than 20 Gram-negative and positive pathogenic microorganisms. Melittin is especially resistant to penicillin-resistant golden grapes. For cocci, the minimum inhibitory concentration of melittin against Staphylococcus aureus is 0.0156ug/ml. Bee venom can also enhance the antibacterial efficacy of sulfonamides and penicillins.
