Canagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor drug that lowers blood sugar by breaking down glucose and expelling it through the kidneys. On June 9, 2012, according to the results of two phase III clinical trials, Johnson & Johnson's (JNJ) experimental type 2 diabetes drug canagliflozin is superior to Merck's Januvia and another old drug glimepiride in reducing blood sugar.
