IL-2又称为T细胞生长因子（T cell growth factor, TCGF），是引起T细胞增殖最重要的细胞因子。IL-2通过与T细胞表面的IL-2受体（IL-2R）的特异性结合而促使T细胞活化，并进入细胞分裂状态。此外，IL-2还可刺激NK细胞的生长并增强其杀伤能力。IL-2与白介2家族的其他T细胞生长因子通过共用受体可活化和扩增CD4+与CD8+ T细胞。IL-2对T细胞和NK细胞的激活作用通过自分泌和旁分泌方式进行。与T细胞不同，NK细胞不表达α受体亚单位，因此对IL-2亲和力较低。但IL-2能促进NK细胞增殖，增强细胞活性和其他细胞因子的分泌。B细胞也受IL-2激活，从而增殖和分化。

IL-2 is a powerful immunoregulatory lymphokine produced by T-cells in response to antigenic or mitogenic stimulation.  IL-2/IL-2R signaling is required for T-cell proliferation and other fundamental functions that are essential for the immune response.  IL-2 stimulates growth and differentiation of B-cells, NK cells, lymphokine-activated killer cells, monocytes, macrophages and oligodendrocytes.  Recombinant Human IL-2 is a 15.5 kDa protein, containing 134 amino acid residues including one intrachain disulfide bond.
